Parker Quartet | Anthony McGill, clarinet | Barry Shiffman, viola | Ani Aznavoorian, cello

The Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet, currently the Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University, joins with the New York Philharmonic’s thrilling principal clarinetist Anthony McGill, principal cellist of Camerata Pacifica Ani Aznavoorian, and artistic director (and violist) Barry Shiffman for a dramatic evening of Mozart and Brahms.

PARKER QUARTET

Inspiring performances, luminous sound, and exceptional musicianship are the hallmarks of the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet. Renowned for its dynamic interpretations and polished, expansive colors, the group has rapidly distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation.  Founded and currently based in Boston, the Parker Quartet’s numerous honors include winning the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, and Chamber Music America’s prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award. Now Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University’s Department of Music, and also in-residence at USC School of Music, the Quartet has held numerous residencies.  The Parker Quartet’s members hold graduate degrees in performance and chamber music from the New England Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School, and the Quartet was part of the New England Conservatory’s prestigious Professional String Quartet Training Program.

ANTHONY MCGILL, clarinet

Anthony serves as the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic — that orchestra’s first African-American principal player — and maintains a dynamic international solo and chamber music career. Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character” (The New York Times), McGill also serves as an ardent advocate for helping music education reach underserved communities and for addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in classical music. McGill was honored to take part in the inauguration of President Barack Obama, premiering a piece by John Williams and performing alongside violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Gabriela Montero.  McGill appears regularly as a soloist with top orchestras and as a chamber musician.  A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, McGill previously served as the principal clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera and associate principal clarinet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. In-demand as a teacher, he serves on the faculty of the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, Bard College’s Conservatory of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music.

BARRY SHIFFMAN, viola

Artistic director of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival and classical music at Rockport Music, internationally acclaimed violinist and violist Barry Shiffman is well-respected as a musician, educator and administrator. He was co-founder of the St. Lawrence String Quartet, and currently serves as both the Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at the Glenn Gould School and Dean of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. During his 17 years with the SLSQ he appeared in over 2,000 concerts in venues around the globe, and recorded several critically acclaimed discs. He has also served in numerous roles at the Banff Centre and currently serves as Executive Director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition.  During his tenure at The Banff Centre he introduced new programming in classical music performance, composition, popular music and jazz while overseeing the dramatic growth of the Competition (BISQC).  Recipient of the Longy School’s Nadia Boulanger Prize for Excellence in the Art of Teaching, he received his formal studies at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, University of Toronto, Utrecht Conservatory, Hartt School of Music, Juilliard School and Yale University.

ANI AZNAVOORIAN, cello

Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a “cellist who shows great sensitivity and great virtuosity at all moments,” Ani Aznavoorian is in demand as a soloist and chamber musician with some of the world’s most recognized ensembles.  An avid chamber musician, Ani has performed with Gil Shaham, Cho-Liang Lin, Sarah Chang, Edgar Meyer, and the Shanghai Quartet. She is a member of the renowned International Sejong Soloists, and is also a founding member of the Corinthian Trio with pianist Adam Neiman and violinist Stefan Milenkovich. Aznavoorian also performs frequently on the Jupiter Chamber Music series in New York.  Ani Aznavoorian received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Aldo Parisot. She is principal cellist of Camerata Pacifica, has been on the faculty at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana, and during the summers serves on the faculty of the Great Mountains Music Festival and School in South Korea.
