Known for their gorgeous three-part harmonies blending bluegrass with a touch of western swing, the Americana trio Red Molly brings audiences to their feet with crisp musicianship and warm, engaging stage presence. The band, made up of Laurie MacAllister (bass), Abbie Gardner (Dobro), and Molly Venter (guitar), return to the stage after a two year hiatus and have a treasure trove of stored up material to perform.
Red Molly began when MacAllister and Gardner, along with songwriter Carolann Solebello met and sang together at a campfire song circle during the 2004 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Hearing how natural their voices sounded together and sharing similar musical tastes, they quickly joined forces. After a few years on the humble coffeehouse circuit, their ascent began with the band gaining the most votes at the 2006 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s Emerging Artist Showcase, followed by being named Top New Artist of the Year by WUMB, Boston’s influential folk radio station. Their 2006 debut record Never Been to Vegas was also listed among their annual Top Albums list. High profile appearances at festivals and concert halls soon became a regular part of their touring schedule as word of their crystalline harmonies and dynamic interplay quickly spread. Their next album Love and Other Tragedies reached number 15 on the Americana Charts in 2008, and two years later James reached number 4 on the same chart.
In 2010, founding member Carolann Solebello stepped down to pursue a solo career. She was replaced by Austin singer-songwriter Molly Venter, who immediately brought a fresh, upbeat, pop-oriented sound to the band’s already potent mix. 2011’s Light in the Sky was the first record to feature the newest Red Molly and included the Abbie Gardner-penned hit single Hello Goodbye. The video for Hello Goodbye (the band’s first official video) became an internet hit, catapulting the band further into the mainstream consciousness.
In addition to the trio’s fine songwriting skills, Red Molly has become known for its exquisite arrangements of tunes from the folk/Americana canon. Unique and fresh takes on modern classics by Gillian Welch and Ryan Adams, as well as covers of timeless classics from Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and even blues icon Robert Johnson often find their way into the band’s sets.
After taking a well-deserved hiatus in 2015, the ladies returned in 2017 with renewed energy and focus.
