Edward Hopper and the Ash Can School

“Edward Hopper and the Ash Can School” will be the topic of a lecture at the Rockport Art Associatiaon on Thursday, May 31st at 7:30 p.m. Inspired by the Edward Hopper retrospective at the MFA in Boston, Jim McAllister takes a look back at the Ash Can school of art in NYC in the first quarter of the 20th century. This lecture will discuss Edward Hopper and his circle, including John Sloan, William Glackens, Leon Kroll, and Stuart Davis.

The illustrated talk will examine the activities and artistic output of the Ash Can painters

relating to both the rough and tumble world of early 20th century New York and the

more gentle milieu of summers on Cape Ann.
