Join acclaimed vocalist Satya Lee Harrington for her Cape Ann kirtan

debut as she leads us through an evening of devotional chant and sacred

song.

Kirtan is a joyous form of devotional, call-and-response chanting that

originated in India centuries ago. At kirtan, we sing the Names of the

Divine from many traditions (Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Christian). The

repetition of these names brings us into a state of collective bliss.

The practice of Kirtan can quiet the mind, heal the body and enrich the

spirit. Scientists have proven that certain sounds can calm the nervous

system, realign the chakras, and remove blockages’both physical and

emotional. And singing is a great way to beat the winter blues, by

opening our hearts and kindling the light within.

Kirtan is a wonderful practice for those who feel they ‘cannot

meditate.’ The quieting effect of chanting is immediate’the mind is

stilled, the heart is opened, and the spirit is set free.

The rhythmic sounds of the tablas (Indian drums) and the drones of the

tamboura, sitar and other Indian instruments also add to the bliss of

kirtan, by inducing deep meditative states.

No singing experience is necessary to join a kirtan. There is no such

thing as a ‘wrong note’ in kirtan because all sounds are sacred. You

become one with the song and with the music.

ADMISSION IS FREE, with donations gratefully accepted. All ages are

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Lee Harrington is a vocalist, kirtan walli, best-selling author,

Kundalini yoga instructor and sound healer from Woodstock, New York. She

used to be terrified of singing in public, until she discovered the

practice of kirtan. Then, as she puts it, ‘her heart cracked open and

her true voice sprang out.’ She has been studying sacred chant (in the

Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Sufi, and Native American traditions) for many

years, and has sung in a wide variety of musical groups, ranging from a

gospel choir in Harlem to an acapella ensemble in Woodstock to an

all-female rock and roll band in New York City. Her kirtan vocal style

has been compared to that of Snatam Kaur and Deva Premal, and she was

recently selected the ‘Best New Female Vocalist’ in the kirtan category

by Eastern Sun magazine.

Tonight Lee Will be accompanied by acclaimed bassist Adam Bauer (who has

played with both Krishna Das and Shyam Das) and drummer Dani Danalian’a

violinist and percussionist (who has played with famed Indian dohlak

master Nandlal Nayak and has made an independent recording, Raga For

Peace, with Anupama (Tabla) and Shailendra Mishra (sitar).
