Essex Elementary School

7:00 PM

Admission is FREE

The Essex Historical Society and the Essex Historical Commission will jointly sponsor a free program on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 entitled ‘Know Your Town Hall.’ This community presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Essex Elementary School on Story Street.

The focus of the evening will be the Essex Town Hall/Library Building, built in 1893. This unique shingle style town hall was constructed with money bequeathed to the town by Thomas Oliver Hazard Perry Burnham. He also left money for the town’s library, which is housed in the building, along with the town offices and a community auditorium.

Architectural historian Tim Orwig, who has researched and written on this building, will present his observations. Copies of drawings by Frank W. Weston, the building’s architect, will be on view. In addition, images of the seldom seen, and now unused auditorium, will be shown.

All residents and interested persons are invited to attend, and requested to bring mementos, pictures, posters, programs and artifacts to share.
