The Cape Ann Museum presents slide show and panel of photographers
In conjunction with the exhibition Charles A. Lowe Photos: Gloucester 1975 the Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present a slide show and panel moderated by Peter Watson, former editor of the Gloucester Daily Times, on Saturday, March 21 at 3:00 p.m. This program is free and open to the public.
Photographers John Blanding, Jim Mahoney and Nubar Alexanian will be sharing their observations about Charlie Lowe and his work as a photographer at the Gloucester Daily Times from 1957 to 1981. The program will begin with a slide presentation of Lowe images that do not appear in the current exhibition. The images were selected by the co-organizers of the Lowe exhibition, Peter Watson and Fred Buck, the Museum’s photo archivist, and include many images that Lowe considered to be his own favorites.
John Blanding is an assistant chief photographer for The Boston Globe where he has been on staff for 30 years. In 1968, while in high school, he started freelancing and working part-time for the Gloucester Daily Times, learning photography from Charlie Lowe.
Jim Mahoney is the director of photography of the Boston Herald. He was a staff photographer for the Herald for 19 years after joining the paper in 1983. He was the chief photographer of the Gloucester Daily Times from late 1981 until 1983. He was the first Times photographer to succeed Charlie Lowe.
Nubar Alexanian is a documentary photographer who has traveled through more than thirty countries to probe the many aspects of human experience. His work has appeared in Life, The New York Times Magazine, Fortune, Time, Geo, Stern, The Sunday Times of London, and The Independent. His five books include Gloucester Photographs, published in 2000. His work is widely collected and exhibited, including recent one-man shows at The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; The Walker Art Center; Caren Golden Fine Art, NY and The Corcoran Gallery of American Art.
Charles A. Lowe Photos: Gloucester 1975 will be on view through May 31. A catalogue of Lowe images accompanies the exhibition. Reproductions of photos from the Charles A. Lowe archives are also available for purchase. The Museum is pleased to offer free admission to the community every Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. through the end of May.
Funding for this program was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences, in order to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.
