Striped Bass: The Ocean’s Greatest Conservation Comeback

The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center continues its Thursday night lecture series at 7 p.m. on January 19th with an appearance by Dick Russell, author of Striper Wars: An American Fish Story. During his 50 minute long slide lecture, “Striped Bass: The Ocean’s Greatest Conservation Comeback,” Russell chronicles the roller coaster ride of the striper population from abundant stocks during colonial days to near extinction in the 1980s. He continues on to describe one of the most remarkable wildlife recoveries in the history of fisheries, and then turns his attention to the new threats that now challenge the stripers. He introduces the cast of players on both sides of the struggle, including fishermen, politicians, businessmen and biologists.

Other presenters included in the GMHC lecture series are as follows: January 26, Michael Tougias, author Ten Hours Until Dawn; March 2, Tom Walker’s presentation , “Marching with Penguins: A Tourist’s View of Antarctica.”

All lectures take place at 7 p.m. at the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center, 23 Harbor Loop in Gloucester. Dessert and coffee follow the presentations. There is no charge, but donations are welcomed. For further information, call 978-281-0470.
