Heroes in their native Australia, the veteran folk rockers known as The Waifs have made significant progress carving out an audience in the U.S. It’s easy to see why as their infectious, harmony-drenched country-folk makes quite an impression no matter what side of the world you’re living.

Coming out of Western Australia, the Waifs began when siblings Donna and Vicki Simpson, already performing as a duo, met Josh Cunningham at an informal jam session and instantly found musical kindred spirits. They toured Australia in a Kombi van throughout the 90’s, playing every gig possible and developing a growing fanbase until releasing their self-titled debut in 1996.

After two more independently released records, they finally began to reach American audiences, scoring a high profile slot at the Newport Folk Festival in 2001. Their fourth record, Up All Night, became a massive hit, going multi-platinum and scoring several ARIA Awards (Australian version of Grammy’s). The album’s breakthrough single ‘London Still’ shot up the charts as well. The Waifs’ profile had risen to the point that they were invited to open up for Bob Dylan on his Australian tour, and later invited to open a leg of his North American tour, helping to cement their commercial viability outside of their native Australia. They continued to tour and record throughout the 2000’s, receiving 11 ARIA nominations (winning four times). Just this year, the trio (which gets augmented to a quintet when touring) released yet another acclaimed record, Beautiful You.
