The Save Our Schooners project is pleased to announce the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (the agency responsible for Ernestina) has appointed Paul Brawley as Executive Director of the Schooner Ernestina. Director Brawley will be announcing plans for Ernestina’s future soon. He is very committed to returning the ship to full Coast Guard certification so that she can sail the waters of New England and the world.
A celebration of the 25th anniversary Cape Verde’s gift of Ernestina to the people of the United States is planned for August 25 (see attached) Thanks to all ASA members who helped turn the ship around. There is still much work to do but the forward momentum is encouraging.
Save the date!
The many friends of Ernestina are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the gifting of the historic Schooner to the United States by the people of Cape Verde. The legendary 113-year-old Tall Ship completed a 41-day transatlantic voyage during the summer of 1982, successfully honoring the promise and the relationship between the two republics.
Festivities will be held at New Bedford State Pier on Saturday, August 25, 2007, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Dockside activities for all ages include: multi-cultural music and food, a commemorative ceremony to mark this milestone in her passage, and more.
~ Let’s write Ernestina’s next chapter together! ~
