Set For Antonio Gentile Bandstand at Stage Fort Park

The 2009 Summer Concert Series at the Antonio Gentile Bandstand in Stage Fort Park in Gloucester continues on Sunday, August 9 at 7 pm with The Herb Pomeroy Tribute Concert, Featuring Donna Byrne and the Herb Pomeroy Band with Greg Hopkins Herb Pomeroy was an influential swing and bebop jazz trumpeter. He played with legends such as Charlie Parker and Lionel Hampton as well as his own jazz bands for over half a century. He was also a beloved and inspirational teacher and leader at Berklee College of Music, MIT and the Lenox School of Music The free outdoor concert paying tribute to Gloucester native and acclaimed musician and teacher Herb Pomeroy is at the Antonio Gentile Bandstand located in Stage Fort Park overlooking picturesque Gloucester Harbor. According to concert organizer David Benjamin, ‘These free concerts are a terrific evening out for all ages. And of course an affordable evening of entertainment which offers great music in a beautiful setting! The special Herb Pomeroy Tribute Concert, Featuring Donna Byrne and the Herb Pomeroy Band with Greg Hopkins will include tunes from the songbook they used for many years while together. After a long and celebrated career as a musician and teacher, Herb Pomeroy passed away in August, 2007 following a lengthy battle with cancer. This concert marks the first time the band has played together since the bandstand concert at Stage Fort Park in August 2007, the weekend after Herb Pomeroy passed away. According to concert organizer Benjamin, ‘Longtime Herb Pomeroy collaborator Donna Byrne was greatly affected by Herb’s death and she decided to retire soon after his passing. August 9 will be Byrne’s first public performance in quite a while and the first that Herb’s band has played together since 2007.’ In honor of Pomeroy the musicians are donating their fees to the Herb Pomeroy Scholarship Fund at Berklee College of Music.

The remainder of the 2009 Summer Concert Series includes a Special Saturday concert on August 15 at 7 pm which features the Cape Ann Community Band in a Tribute Concert to honor longtime Gloucester High School Band Director Robert Puff; and the final concert of the summer on Sunday, August 23 at 7 pm featuring local favorites the acoustic bluegrass masters Old Cold Tater.
