Mid-Winter Movies @ the Library

Movies to brighten winter’s days are back by popular demand at the Rockport Public Library. ‘Cabin Fever Movies’ on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 o’clock, beginning on Jan. 12, are light-hearted classics. Saturday Matinees, beginning on Jan. 16, feature recent award-nominated films at 2:00 p.m. All movies and popcorn are free. The building is handicapped accessible.

CABIN FEVER MOVIES: The Tuesday series begins Jan. 12 with Peter Sellers and David Niven in the ‘Pink Panther’ movie of Inspector Clouseau trying to catch a jewel thief right under his nose. Audrey Hepburn is at her Oscar-winning best on Jan. 19 as a bored princess who escapes her guardians and falls in love with American newsman’Gregory Pack’in ‘Roman Holiday.’ Gene Kelly dances down the street again in ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ on Jan. 26.

Dustin Hoffman plays an unemployed actor who disguises himself as a woman in ‘Tootsie’ on Feb. 2. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine star in the romantic comedy ‘The Apartment’ on Feb. 9. Maurice Chevalier thanks heaven for little girls when he stars with Leslie Caron in ‘Gigi’ on Feb. 16. A marriage of convenience turns into more than that when Gerard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell star in ‘Green Card’ on Feb. 23.

The classic Alfred Hitchcock movie of a wheelchair-bound photographer who spies on his neighbors and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder is brought to life when Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly star in ‘Rear Window’ on March 2. The series concludes on March 9 with Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif starring in ‘Funny Girl’, the life of comedienne Fannie Brice.

SATURDAY MATINEES: Rockport’in the guise of Sitka, Alaska’is the setting for the ‘The Proposal’ starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds on Jan. 16. A team of investigative reporters work alongside police to solve the murder of a congressman’s mistress in ‘State of Play’ starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, and Rachel McAdams on Jan. 23. On Jan. 30 Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in ‘500 Days of Summer”the story of a woman who doesn’t believe true love exists, and the young man who falls for her.

On Feb. 6 Abbie Cornish and Paul Schneder star in ‘Bright Star”the story of the relationship between poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne. Julia Child’s story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with a young woman’s challenge to cook all the recipes in Child’s first book in ‘Julie and Julia’ starring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Stanley Tucci on Feb. 13. Two corporate spies who share a steamy past hook up to pull off the ultimate con job on their bosses when Julia Roberts and Clive Owen team up in ‘Duplicity’ on Feb. 20. A man who ties balloons to his house and sets off to see the wilds of South America but soon finds he has an 8-year-old stowaway in the Walt Disney/Pixar Animation movie ‘Up’ featuring the voices of Ed Asner, and Christopher Plummer on Feb. 27.

On March 6 Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, and Josh Brolin star in ‘Milk’, the story of Harvey Milk’s struggles for gay rights and California’s first openly gay elected official. Film won two Oscars, including best actor for Penn. The Saturday Matinees will conclude on March 13 with Daniel Craig as James Bond seeking revenge for the death of his love in ‘Quantum of Solace.’
