About the Artist:
After working as a commercial artist and jewelry designer, John Fleming moved to Rockport in 1994, where he pursues his sculpting, drawing and painting.
“When drawing, I explore the way that we humans and nature have existed together. We build and use, destroy and replace. We have created relationships that can be visually exciting, harmonious or disturbing. Drawing becomes my meditation when I try to capture this interaction, this sense of place and timelessness.
My sculpture primarily involves the human figure. To work on a sculpture, building and shaping the surface only to cut parts away and rebuild again, is to try to impart the same sense of growth, neglect, breaking down and recovery that we all experience.”
